AUPCTRE Celebrates the Joint NLC/TUC 2026 May Day with the theme: “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”

Members of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Employees (AUPCTRE) joined millions of workers nationwide to commemorate the annual celebration of May Day, 2026.

Workers from all 36 states of the federation and the FCT celebrated the 2026 International Workers’ Day with fresh calls for urgent action on insecurity and economic hardship.

The celebration, which was organized jointly by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), was held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory under the theme: “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”

AUPCTRE leadership, alongside its members and other Nigerian workers, used the occasion to highlight the growing challenges facing the aging workforce, particularly rising insecurity and deepening poverty.

Union leaders noted that these issues continue to undermine productivity, job stability, and the overall well-being of workers in Nigeria.

The two major labour leaders, Comrade Joe Ajaero and his counterpart from TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, and other speakers at this year’s May Day event stressed that persistent security concerns, ranging from insurgency to kidnappings, have disrupted livelihoods and discouraged investment, while the rising cost of living has eroded workers’ purchasing power.

Workers also called on governments at all levels to prioritize safety, strengthen social protection systems, and implement policies that will always promote fair wages and decent working conditions. The Federal Government delivered a goodwill message through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The various unions also emphasized the need for sustained dialogue between government, employers, and labour representatives to address structural economic challenges and ensure inclusive growth and settlement of outstanding wage awards.

Despite all the concerns raised, the May Day 2026 celebration in FCT was marked by solidarity marches, colourful displays, and renewed commitment among workers to continue advocating for their rights and improved living standards.
